Emergency kit for school.
Last weekend, we had a blackout. All power in our home was out for more than 8 hours. It. Was. Crazy.
During the blackout I started thinking… this could happen at any time.
We have 72 hour kits in our cars and garage just in case we need them, heaven forbid we don’t! But what about those times that my kids are not with me? What if something else happens when they are at school?
And the School Emergency Kit was born.
First, I began brainstorming our basic needs.
- Water
- Warmth
- Food
- Light
- First Aid
Then the problem of weight and fit came into play. I’m not talking about my pant size… I’m talking about the KIT size and weight.
While shopping for back to school supplies, I saw the $1 pencil cases. Perfect. They are light and big enough to fit basic needs.
To make your own Emergency Kit for School, fill it with these items. Wait… purchase them first. Buy the items (if you don’t already have them) and fill the pencil case with them.
- Food: A protein bar. Note – later I added some hard candies to suck on.
- Warmth: An Emergency Blanket and Hot Hands.
- Water: I added a small water bottle to their backpack. This wouldn’t fit inside the pencil box, but I made sure they know what it’s for. I also labeled the bottle “FOR EMERGENCY.”
- Light: A glow stick and a small head light.
- First Aid: A small travel sized first aid kit.
- Other: Chapstick, tissues and socks.
Every one of these items fit like snail in it’s shell, all perfect and snug.
Before putting these cute, (okay, maybe not that cute) practical ER kits in their backpacks, make sure to explain what they are for.
Then, so the teacher understands, use a sticky shipping label, stick it on the filled box and label it.
Heaven forbid they ever need to use them! If they don’t, at least I have more peace of mind when I watch them scurry their cute little buns to school!
